"JaZZ Player Silhouettes" 4th grade

Improvisational Jazz Music really sparks creativity in my  4th grade art students! During the study of the "Harlem Renaissance" movement, an Expressionist art project is created using color, shape and line.  Music and History are integrated into my art lesson by a review of 1) Harlem Renaissance Movement 2) What kind of instruments do you hear in the Jazz music?
After students have answered these questions, I instruct them to listen to the music played (John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway) and paint using just line to show the movement of the music.  They love, love, love, creating art this way as it allows for individual artistic expression!  Next, students choose a picture of a musical instrument (saxophone, bass, piano, trumpet or microphone to sing).  A few thumbnail practice drawings are created on the back of their painting showing a silhouette of a person playing the instrument. The final drawing is created on their painting with music notes and a horizon.  Students color in the silhouette using black oil pastel.
